Hurricane Cats

I wrote this during lunch. If you are familiar with Galveston, Texas, before Hurricane Ike, then this story takes place off of 61st street, behind the old Popeye's Chicken near the old HEB. Hope you enjoy.

Don't worry, the Dragons are still flying around in my head! They haven't gone anywhere. In the meantime, enjoy a bit of a story about Big Boy and Baby Girl, titled "Hurricane Cats."

The big, old Tom meowed loudly as he sniffed around the back of the building.  He could usually find something to eat where the humans dumped things. Despite the danger, this was one of their better spots for food. The humans were lazy and sometimes just dropped the bags on the ground, saving them trouble of climbing into the big, metal box.

He glanced back at a pair of big grey eyes, that watched him carefully from the deep grass beyond the edge of the pavement. She wouldn’t come out until he told her it was safe, and he had managed to find something for them to eat. He poked around among the bags, analyzing the many smells. After a few tries, he found one that seemed promising, promptly ripping it open with his front claws. He was immediately rewarded by a large number of chicken parts that tumbled out onto the ground. He turned back to signal his mate, but she had been watching him, and was already half way across the pavement from her hiding spot. He returned his attention to the chicken, sniffing them appraisingly to find a suitable piece as the little female helped herself to a drumstick.

A cool wind, blowing in off the gulf, sent a chill over them as they ate their dinner. They paused again to look around, sniffing the air, knowing that the wind meant a storm was coming. They would need to return to their home soon, before the weather turned worse and it started to rain. They paused from their feast, cautiously glancing around, knowing that the humans could interrupt them at any time. The little female paused, her teeth still hurting from their last run-in with the humans, abandoned the drumstick in search of something softer. She found another piece that suited her tender mouth and dug in.

A strong gust of wind startled them from their meal, sending the trash and debris skittering around them. The sudden, loud screeching of the rusty metal door on the back of the building was all of the warning they had, as two of the humans stepped out of the building. The little cat quickly abandoned her meal, darting back into the tall grass. The big cat quickly followed her, but not before grabbing another large hunk of chicken from the ripped bag. The humans shouted, but the two cats were gone before they could react. He quickly joined her on the far side of the grassy yard, where she had taken shelter under the edge of a woodpile, alongside of a old garage. She watched as he dropped the food in front of her, turning his attention to the two humans, who were still yelling at them.

Suddenly something thumped against the wall above them. They froze, not sure if the humans had discovered their hiding spot. Much to their surprise, a piece of chicken landed on the ground in front of their hiding place. The big Tom didn’t hesitate, darting quickly out to secure the piece, and drag it back into the safety of their hide. By the time he returned, the female was tentatively licking the piece he had carried over. He meowed approvingly at her, settling down in the deep grass and the safety of their hide to enjoy the piece that had fallen out of the sky.

The wind continued to blow, as the rain began to fall. They continued to feed, knowing they would eat as long as they could before retreating to their den. They could tell it was going to be a big storm, but they were not worried. Their den was strong, and had protected them from the humans and storms for a long time.

Drakkon Dreams Part One

The Drakkon was tired and he ached mightily from a simple hunt gone horribly wrong. The tattered edges of his wings were slashed and shredded from the fight with the Rahhol, and they fluttered noisily in the wind as he searched for a place to rest. The nest was several hours away, but in his current condition, he would not make it back tonight. Better to find a cave and rest. And ensure that his pursuers were not trying to follow him back to the nest.
His anger grew as he replayed the ambush in his mind. He should have never allowed himself to be caught unawares like that; but he had given as good as he got. At least one of the four renegades was on the ground, not moving, while another had limped back into the tangled woods with a broken wing. The others had finally broken off, responding to the calls for help from their wounded brethren, enabling him to escape. A low growl rumbled from his belly – they only broke off the fight because they thought he was done for! They would be able to easily follow the trail of blood streaming from his wounds, if they were determined to finish him off.

The Drakkon focused his mind and drew upon his dangerously low magical reserves. His breathing was labored, the dull pain in his side becoming sharper the further he flew. Perhaps some broken or cracked ribs! Hopefully nothing too bad… A red haze clouded his vision and he blinked to clear the blood from his eyes. The clouds broke and the moonlight bathed the side of the mountain in dark relief. His sharp eyes picked out a shadow on the side of the mountain, his instincts telling him it was a cave. He banked and circled, clearing his mind and focusing all his senses on the sky around him, as he spiraled down. He braced himself as he banked his wings, scooping them to slow his descent, his battered wings vibrating wildly as he slowed, pain shooting through the wing joints to every bone in his body. He extended his large claws and braced himself as he crashed into the side of the mountain. He folded his wings against his side as he stumbled and fell into the dark opening. The cave entrance was smaller than he had judged, the spikes along the top of his huge head scraping against the roof of the cavern as he collapsed in a leathery heap on the cave floor. His body filled with pain, every nerve screaming, as he skidded to a stop on the rocky floor of the cave. He raised his head to look around and the passed out, the blackness finally taking him.

*****

The sky was clear and there were few clouds to hide the bright moon. His wings were stiff and his body was sore, but he felt better than he had since the ambush. A few days of rest, some water and a couple of deer that had wandered close to the cave fortified him for tonight’s flight. He was still a long way from the safety of the nest and his nest mates; and there remained the danger of further attack, but he was not afraid. The air currents along the mountains were strong tonight, enabling him to ride another thermal up in a great spiral to a higher altitude, looking along his back trail while checking the sky around him. So far there was no sign of his pursuers; perhaps they had found other prey, or had been unable or unwilling to follow his trail. He thought about his nest mates, fearing what they would say when he returned. He sighed, knowing it would be a long time before they let him forget this trip. The nest did not approve of his far-ranging absences and never missed an opportunity to chide him for his “unnatural” behavior. His four brothers and three sisters hunted close to the nest in pairs, to better provide protection against this kind of attack from the renegades that once threatened all the nests. But the renegade Rahhol had been quiet for a long time and he was convinced that they had moved away from the area where the Drakkon had nested for many generations.

He felt his body slowing as pressure from the thermal peaked and began to fall off. Holding his wings rigid, he crested the top of the pressure wave and coasted along, tilting left and right for another look around. The sky was clear; there was no sign of his pursuers or any other life. Tonight he seemed to have the sky to himself. There was a scattering of clouds at this height, with enough moisture to chill his massive body. Nevertheless, he decided to stay at this altitude for as long as he could. If there were others out hunting this evening, they would be far below him.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Drakkon of the DragonHawk Saga!

A snippet from Dragon Hunters!

Here's a little snippet from Dragon Hunters for you:

"Reaching between a stand holding several bracelets and a small round box, she picked up a strange-looking ring laying on the worn metal shelf by itself. She held the ring up to the light and caught her breath as the intricate carving and details became apparent, her Dragon growling uneasily. The ring was formed by a pair of dragons, one gold and one silver, their bodies entwined in battle. The dragons’ heads faced each other, jaws open, terrible fangs bared. Their claws grasped at the body of the other and their barbed tails were wrapped around each other. Their eyes were glittering jewels, a sparkling red ruby for the gold dragon and endless obsidian for the silver. The ring was surprisingly light; its bulk and size led her to think of it as a man’s ring. It was both breathtakingly beautiful and frightening."

Christmas time is coming! Are you buying a Kindle or a Nook for someone in your family? You can download a copy of Dragon Hunters from Amazon for the Kindle or from Barnes & Noble for the Nook!

Dragon Heart Progress

Tonight I finished working on the fourth chapter of Dragon Heart!

When I decided to expand my writing to ten stories for the DragonHawk Saga, I broke up the existing versions of Gateway Station and Tycho Station, along with all of the other pieces and parts that I had saved, and distributed them among the new story ideas. Dragon Heart was at 46,302 words when I finished Dragon Hunters. It is now up to 49,290 words. I added 1001 words today!

So now on to the next chapter, The Tea Merchant's son. It consists of 6,315 words from Tycho Station and features Bane Sollar returning to Conborine to continue his search for the elusive smuggler Kalra Rbaaq.

The Writing Business

Well, the writing business has been keeping me busy since I e-published Dragon Hunters. While the Kindle version appeared to upload properly. I was having some problems with the Smashwords version, which was reported as having some errors, missing parts. I've spent the last month fixing errors and making some changes.

Anyway, I like the way it came out. Both versions are updated on their respective websites and are available for purchase. I've learned a lot about publishing on Kindle and Smashwords. Hopefully it will help me to publish faster and cleaner in the future.

So now back to Dragon Heart. This main plot of the story is new, but many parts of it have come from parts I have edited out of Dragon Hunters and Dragon Betrayal, book three. So my mission now is to write the main plot line, while tying in all of the extra parts and continuing to build towards the Return of the Great Dragon.

Since Dragon Hunters has not become a best seller yet, I still have my day job to contend with. That relegates the DragonHawk Saga to the evenings and weekends. I hope to settle down into a better routine of writing the story and making posts. The story is just getting started and we have a long way to go to the Return of the Great Dragon. I'll keep you posted as best I can along the way.

As always,

Thanks for reading!

A Taste of Dragon Hunters

Here's a little bit from Dragon Hunters that I thought I would share tonight:

“I did not say that.” Elias smoothly replied with a smile. “I think it is a good move. The T&B facility is sorely needed. The Conbor government needs as much help as the Trade can offer. There’s plenty of profit for anyone willing to help Conbor and the other OutWorld colonies.”

“What about the Royal Republics?” Annie asked. “What do you think they will do?” Annie caught herself, her face filling with uncertainty as she felt the sudden change in the web of dragon magic that englobed them. Have I said the wrong thing…

Bless you, Annie! Elias thought as his Dragon Within fiercely growled. She had asked the perfect question.

“There’s nothing they can do.” Elias calmly and coldly answered. “Otherwise, they would have already done it. The war in the InWorlds will only get worse,” Elias said, using his father’s words to the Star Trader Council. “The attack on Trann’s Planet is just the latest escalation. Manervia and Worrendell won’t stop until they have captured or isolated all of Core’s allies.”

He paused and sipped his wine, frowning as if he were in deep thought. His Dragon Within continued to rumble as he concentrated on his words.

“I suspect Travernon will be next,” He calmly stated to a chorus of gasps from those eavesdropping on their conversation. “It’s the only major technology center left in the InWorlds. Manervia and Worrendell need Travernont intact to continue processing the food products from Trann’s Planet.”

Annie was surprised by Elias Hawkes’ cold words, her own indignation building. She started to speak, stopping as Capella growled a warning. She glanced at the crowd gathered around the display, taking in the outraged expressions and looks of surprise on their faces as she suddenly realized what he had been doing.

Easy Capella! He’s deliberately provoking them! She said, watching the indignant crowd as she struggled to regain her composure and that of her trembling Dragon Within. We must remain calm!

She’s talking to her Dragon Within! Procyon rumbled, but Elias could feel her fear building as she and her Dragon Within struggled to remain calm. They sense the anger in the crowd!

I know. Elias replied, the dragon magic roiling between them as her Dragon Within growled excitedly. Get ready. I’m going to touch her. Do what you can for Capella. Procyon growled his readiness as Elias turned to Annie and took her hand.

“Annie.” Elias quietly said, calmly wrapping the two of them in a protective bubble of dragon magic as he reached out and touched her arm. “Tell you Dragon Within to remain calm. You are safe. You have the protection of the Tycho Drakkon.”

Startled, Annie looked up as Elias Hawkes spoke to her. Time seemed to stop around them as she felt the welcoming cocoon of dragon magic engulf them. Capella began to growl, but was suddenly cut off as Procyon’s low rumble washed over them.

“Annie,” Elias whispered again. “Don’t worry. You are safe. I am here and my parents are close by.”

“Elias…” She began. “When we met I sensed…”

“Shh!” He said. “Let’s not talk about it right now.” He nodded his head and she looked around, realizing that there was a large number of people were still watching them. Closing her eyes, she cleared her mind.

Its okay Capella! She soothed her anxious Dragon Within. We are safe! We are among friends!

Don't forget! Dragon Hunters is now available on Amazon.com for the Kindle and from Smashwords (www.smashwords.com) for other devices.

A tidbit from Dragon Heart...

Here's a tidbit from Dragon Heart that I have been playing with:

“They see you and I together…” He started, searching for the right words as Procyon rumbled awkwardly. “And they think… they hope they see the future of the Tycho Star Traders.”

Capella cautiously growled in response to Procyon as Annie blushed furiously. They had grown steadily closer since that fateful reception at Gaanard when she had first met Elias and his parents. Since then, her fate seemed to be racing down a predetermined path by the visions that continued to haunt her mind. While she remained determined to control her own fate, her own destiny, she could not help but feel her love for Elias steadily growing. She was pretty sure he was falling in love with her in his own, sometimes aggravating, sometimes romantic, always cute in an awkward sort of way. Had he seen visions of his own? Or was he just driven by his powerful sense of purpose and duty as the son of the StarHawke Tycho?

And then there was the Hawkkur Legion and its fanatically loyal members. The Family Guard, the Gaanard Troop and the Hawkkur Combat Teams embarked upon the Tycho Triumph and the Tycho Victory, whose members had fiercely thrown themselves into the battle on Conborine. To rescue her from Reska kidnappers. To rescue a family from the mercenaries who had taken over their business. To rescue Tolen and Blom from the threats to their ill-fated terminal project. And to rescue a city from the clutches of a Black Dragon – a Rahhol DragonHawk – who was their sworn enemy. They did these things willingly because they were driven by their duty as a Hawkkur Warrior, the honor of the Warriors who had served and died before them. And for the glory of the Hawkkur Legion and the generations of Hawkkur Warriors yet to be born.

Duty. Honor. Glory. It permeated everyone and everything at the Tycho Trade Station. Coupled with Fate it pushed them inexplicably towards whatever destiny was in store for the Tycho Drakkon and their people.

As always, thanks for reading! And don't forget to get your copy of Dragon Hunters and let me know what you think!

A Dragon Hunters Update

Well, it's been a long two weeks for me, cleaning up and reformatting Dragon Hunters and resolving the various issues that I was having with the Amazon Kindle process. The main problem turned out to be with Internet Explorer not wanting to process the Kindle page. I switched over Google Chrome and the process worked fine. The Kindle IT people recommended Firefox, but the software my wife uses for her work is not compatible with Firefox, so I can't install that.

Anyway, Chrome is working okay and right now Dragon Hunters is being processed for Kindle on the Amazon site, and by SMASHWORDS for the Nook, Apple Bookstore and a variety of other formats. It will take a few hours (6 to 24?) for them to process, but hopefully by Monday Dragon Hunters will officially be online for sale.

So, keep your fingers crossed and I'll let you know when Dragon Hunters is available for your purchase! As always...

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunter Update

I hope you are having a good weekend.

I hoped to write this entry to tell you that Dragon Hunter was now available on Amazon, but unfortunately, I continue to have some technical problems with their website. I hope to have those problems resolved soon.

It has been an interesting process getting here. I have developed a better understanding of the value of having a publisher to deal with these mundane issues so I can concentrate on the writing. Of course, the proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes. What will determine if it has all been worthwhile is whether or not anyone likes the book.

In the meantime, I will take advantage of a quiet, rainy Saturday here in Seabrook, Texas, to continue working on the saga. I'm fighting the urge to go back through Dragon Hunter one more time... I should be making the transition to Dragon Heart... We'll see.

Whatever happens, I'll be ready for Amazon just as soon as their IT resolves the problem. Hopefully this weekend.

As always, thanks for reading!

Marching Towards Publication

This morning, about 02:30 AM, I finished my last full edit of Dragon Hunters. Since waking up about 11:30 or so, I have been working on the final assembly of the book. Title Page, Copyright Page, Dedication, and then the Main Story. Right now, I am paging through, searching for any obvious errors after completing the conversion to filtered html for the Kindle processor.

Listening to the Star Wars Saga while I work on the DragonHawk Saga.  Hmm, wonder if I will every have my own soundtrack...

Meanwhile, I plan to upload Dragon Hunters on Thursday, August 1st. So, keep your fingers crossed, Dragon Hunters is getting closer!

As always,

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunter Update

Slow and steady wins the race?  Last two weeks have been nerve-wracking for me. I knew I was behind and I've been pushing myself but not making very much progress. Things have calmed down a bit and I feel like I'm in control. With the help of family and friends, I've (we've) come up with a design for a business card to use to advertise Dragon Hunters and the Saga. Should have those from Vistaprint soon. Fairly inexpensive and I think they'll look cool.

So what do you think? I'll have these in about a week.

Meanwhile, I'm 85% finished with the editing for the Kindle version. After I finish editing the  manuscript format, I have to put it through the Kindle converter on the Amazon website. It takes about 48 hours before it will appear on my bookshelf.

Hopefully I'll get all of this done by the weekend!

Today at work, it occurred to me that if I write 1 book a year, I'll be 70 years old when I'm done!

Oh, well. As always,

Thanks for reading!

Friday, July Twelve, Two thousand thirteen: Time Marches On!

Well, it's Friday, the start of the second weekend of July. If you have been following the progress of Dragon Hunters, you are probably expecting me to be announcing that the story is finished and posted.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. Last weekend I had the opportunity to work uninterrupted for the entire weekend. I averaged about 18 hours per day from Friday through early Monday morning. I didn't finish my editing like I wanted. But I did achieve a massive case of burnout.

Monday meant making a quick jump via Transit Space from the Star Trader Galaxy to Reality, returning to the work that pays the bills. A tough, challenging week  that left me with little time to write.

Which brings me to today. Err, tonight. Almost tomorrow. I'm about two-thirds of the way through the manuscript, with about one hundred and twenty pages to go. I hope to be down closer to one hundred before I quit tonight or early in the morning.

So, just like the Tycho Drakkon and the Hawkkur Legion, I march on towards that magical day when the Great Dragon returns to the Star Folk. In the meantime, I promise to bring you the first installment of this great adventure that I am on. Just as soon as Big Boy and I can. As always,

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunters Update!

Some good news to share tonight about Dragon Hunters. I'm in the final steps of electronically publishing Dragon Hunters and will have it available for sale on Amazon in the Kindle format. I also plan to publish it for the Nook and other formats as well.

You can see the beautiful cover on the right side of the blog. The cover art was produced by a very talented young lady, Erica Nielsen-DiStafano. Doesn't it look great?

Dragon Hunter Update

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to give you an update to Dragon Hunters. I finished editing the story on Friday night/Saturday morning about 1 AM. The next step is to convert the MS Word file to the various electronic formats for Kindle, Nook, and some of the other readers. I hope to get that done during the course of the week. My current manuscript in MS Word is double spaced and covers 560 pages. I have to convert it to single space, remove my headers and footers, write the foreward statement, etc.

Then I have to set up the accounts on Amazon and wherever else the book will be offered for sale...

Argh!

This is a big step for me. No one has read Dragon Hunter but me. Some people reviewed the first part, but no one has read the whole thing. I am nervous as all get-out about what people will think. Will they like it? Will they hate it? Will they laugh at me?

Fighting the urge to hide in my writing and dive into Dragon Heart or go back and redo some part of Dragon Hunter.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

Linking Things Together

Tonight I made some changes to link this blog to my new website. Just to the right you'll see a list of "My Links". Only one there for right now, but it's an important one! It will take you to the DragonHawk Saga website.

Conversely there are buttons and links on the website that will bring you over here to Cats & Dragons.

I've been making some changes to the website. Changing such things as the layout, text boxes, and such. Just trying to find the right mix.

If you have any ideas about how I might change the website or the blog, please let me know. As always,

The DragonHawk Saga moves steadily forward!

An update tonight for everyone who has been following and encouraging me.

Tonight, I took the website live. The address is:
http://dtransou.wix.com/davetransou

I'm not totally thrilled with it, but its a start for now. I will continue to tinker with it as time permits. If you go by there, use the Contact Page to let me know what you think!

Dragon Hunters is coming along nicely. I still hope to have it ready to upload to Amazon and the Kindle before the end of the June. Other versions will be available soon after that.

As always,

Thanks for reading!

The View from my Desk!

Work on the Saga was delayed yesterday evening for some surprise modifications. My family surprised me with a new pair of matching 27 inch monitors! I believe they will help me work more efficiently because I can have more files open at the same time.

For example, when I am working on the story, I can have my list of 397 characters, 115 named starships, 96 named companies and organizations, 53 named cities, and 19 star systems open. Along with one or more of the 4 reference manuals.

LOL! I know, lock me up and throw away the key! Now, if I could just convince my client and my bosses, I may never have to leave the house again!

Thanks for reading!

Progress Report

A pause from the frenetic march of time to give you an update.

Website:
I hope to have a "starter" website up and running before the weekend ends. There will be some temporary graphic placeholders, but it will be up and running.

Dragon Hunters:
Still editing past some rough spots. My goal is to get it up on Amazon for sale before the end of the month. Today's the 14th, so that leaves 16 days to finish up the editing.

Graphics:
Looking pretty good. I wish I could share them with you, but I don't want to do that until they are finished.

In the meantime,

A Dragon Hunter Update

Last week I finished Part 1 of Dragon Hunter, Gaanard Bay. A few days later, I finished the Battle of Conborine, Part 2. I started work on reformatting and editing Part 1 for the Kindle, and sent copies out to three  friends who are acting a Beta readers critiquing, commenting and criticizing.

Since then, I decided I didn't like Part 1 as a standalone part. It seemed too small. And the change of formatting did something, I'm not sure what, to the text. Either the converter chopped up some sentences and words, or I had a bunch of errors I missed. So I'm going back through the full length version looking for errors. Of which I have found a bunch.

I could have sworn I wrote that whole sentence...

So the path forward from here is to finish this edit, fix the mistakes and then look to converting Dragon Hunters to e-book format. In addition to the Kindle, I intend to go after a Nook version as well.

On the website front, I haven't made much progress either. I've been looking at some of the basic packages, but I'm hung up on the templates and their default layouts. I really haven't found a generic one that I like. (I guess that's why they call them generic, huh?). They have layouts for every kind of small business or entrepreneurial service you can think of, except for half-mad writers with visions of grandeur. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet, pick one and do the best I can with it. At least until I become a rich, famous writer who can afford to hire a web designer and a graphics firm...

Speaking of graphics, I may have part of that problem in the process of being solved. An artist friend of mine is playing around with some of my ideas. I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch. Or this case, the Trade Station, I need to get back to work on Dragon Hunters. I've edited 3 of what is now 35 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue. 554 pages in double spaced manuscript format, and 147,548 words. I'd like to get a couple of more chapters finished today.

As always, thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunter is finished!

Dragon Hunters, Book One of the DragonHawk Saga is complete. Not Part 1 nor Part 2. The entire story.

I didn't like the way the parts looked, so I decided keep the story intact. Right now it's sitting on the other screen where I have started converting and editing. I hope to have it up on Amazon soon.

Hang in there DragonHawk Fans! It will be to you soon!

An update on Dragon Hunters

So, here's the thing... I converted the first part of Dragon Hunter, Gaanard Bay, into a format for an e-book (Kindle right now, others later). And I didn't like what I saw. I didn't like the paragraph spacing. I didn't like the length. It doesn't read right single spaced for the converter.

So I'm going to finish Dragon Hunters, the whole, intact story, (tonight I hope!) And then convert it to e-book format and see how it reads.

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunters Part 2, The Battle of Conborine

The remodeling of the old Immigration Terminal on Conborine by T&B Spaceyards goes horribly wrong. As the construction project is attacked by local forces working for an unknown enemy, Annie Tolen is kidnapped from the site.

Is her kidnapping part of the campaign against the Tolen and Blom Star Traders?

Or is this a matter of DragonHawks?

Manchor Tolen, Elder of the Tolen Star Traders and the leader of the T&B expedition to Conborine does not know. Convinced the Star Trader Council cannot help him, he turns to the only Star Traders capable of finding his niece and saving his people - the StarHawke Tycho and his Hawkkur Legion.

The Drakkon of Tycho know that this is a matter of DragonHawks. As the StarHawke Tycho prepares his forces for a possible Trade-wide war, he sends his son Elias and a Hawkkur Combat Team to rescue Annie Tolen, secure the T&B facility, and deal with threat on Conborine.

Sound interesting?

Completing and editing Part 2 is coming along pretty well. I took last weekend off to go to Round Rock and visit my wonderful son and daughter in law, and my oh-so-wonderful granddaughter Caitlyn. But now I'm back on track, working when I can on the story.

Looking at different sources for a website. An article in a local (Clear Lake, Tx) magazine featured an author who is selling his stories on Amazon in Kindle format and advertising via one of these do-it-yourself websites. I had already started looking at Amazon and the Kindle format. Its a huge platform that could help get my stories out to a wide audience. And it would be a start.

I plan to spend some time this weekend looking at converting Part 1 to see how it comes out in the Kindle format. Maybe I can get a website set up. I already have two domain names: davetransou.com and starhawke.com. I also have to set up a PayPal account and an Amazon seller account.

So, plenty to do! And an actual path forward...

Dragon Hunters, Part 1 Gaanard Bay

It started out as a routine trip to the Gaanard Trade Station. But the StarHawke Tycho knew that nothing was routine these days, as the Trade drew closer to the war raging in the InWorlds. A surprise attack on a neutral planet, an attack by Dragon Hunters against the StarHawke Tycho, and the discovery of a young, female DragonHawk hiding among the Tolen Star Traders who could trigger the Return of the Great Dragon keep the StarHawke Tycho, his wife Mani Hawkes, and their son Elias guessing as they and their fierce Hawkkur Legion respond to new threats to the Drakkon of Tycho.

Dragon Hunters, Part 1 Gaanard Bay, is finished. I hope to have it in Kindle format soon and available on Amazon. Also watch for a new website coming soon!

A Quiet Saturday...

A quiet Saturday of writing and drinking coffee.

Today I'm working on breaking Dragon Hunters into two parts, which requires a bit of modification of the story.

Once I have the two parts cleaned up, I can start working on the publishing and marketing process.

As always,

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunters, Part 1 and Part 2?

Well, we are back from the cruise. A nice relaxing week without having to think about anything beyond what to have for dinner or what to have to drink while laying around the forward pool.

As I said before I left, Dragon Hunters is complete. Time to start on the marketing side of publishing a book. Ugh, I'm not very good at marketing.

Dragon Hunters is a large novel. The current manuscript is 143,091 words spread over 539 double spaced pages. Those who are knowledgeable of the publishing world say that the average book should be no more than 80,000 words.

So I think I will break it into two parts. Part 1 will be about 293 pages. Part 2 will be about 245 pages. A little modification should further equalize them out.

All of that work should take a couple of weeks, if I don't get sidetracked by work.

Well, its late and I am tired. As always,

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunters is Finished

Dragon Hunters is finished! The first book in the DragonHawk Saga is ready for... what?

That's a good question. The work list right now looks like this:

Update all of my notes and background information:

  • The DragonHawk Saga Rules Manual, which describes all the rules of how things work in the Star Trader Galaxy.
  • The DragonHawk Saga Development Manual, which contains notes on characters, storylines, plots, sequences, etc.
  • DragonHawk Saga History Manual, which is my attempt to write a formal history of the Star Folk/Star Traders.
  • DragonHawk Saga Reference Manual, which  is a reference to everything Star Trader, including the Major Star Trader Families, the Trade Stations, Star Trader technology, food, beverages, starship construction details, military organization, governments, and a myriad of other details.
  • Star Trader Data, a spreadsheet that is a quick reference to everything in the Reference Manual that I frequently refer to.
  • Master Storyboard, a spreadsheet that describes each story by chapter and is the primary sequence of events in the DragonHawk Saga.

Then there's publishing. What to do with the story? I may send queries to some of the "paper" publishers, but I don't hold out much hope for that route. So I will e-publish in a variety of formats and list the book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

And eventually my own website. (Anyone know someone who does really good website design cheaply? And graphics! I draw about as good as I sing... I think you can figure out where I am going with that!)

Meanwhile, Book #2, Dragon Heart, is already underway. The prologue and the first two chapters have been written, and there are some other bits and pieces in place. This story will be more challenging, because I have to write about the courtship of Elias Hawkes and Annie Tolen, more romance than sci-fi and fantasy, although I have to have enough action to make sure these elements are taken care of.

But, I will be taking a few days off for now. Cindy and I are taking a four-day cruise on Disney Magic from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel. Be back home by Saturday. (If you've cruised to Cozumel before, and have any suggestions for places to shop or eat, leave a comment!)

I'll probably get back to work on the DragonHawk Saga on Sunday. Not sure I can stay away from the computer that long, but we'll give it a try. As always,

Thanks for reading!

Dragon Hunters Update

I'm closing in on the finish to Dragon Hunters. I stayed up late last night until about 1:30 AM working on an important chapter, the Battle of Conborine. It's still a bit rough, but I think it is more coherent than it was.

I tempted to end the story here. I wanted to end with a good lead-in to the second book, Dragon Heart, but I think I can accomplish that with what I have.

Hmmm....

I may be closer to the end than I thought I was.

The Battle of Conborine

Dragon Hunters is approaching its end, starting with this battle in the warehouse district of Conborine!

“Attention on deck!”

The Hawkkur Combat Team, assembled in one of the empty warehouses, snapped to attention as Lord DragonHawk Elias Hawkes strided into the room, followed by Commander Obrie Lorcan and the command staff, all wearing their battle armor. Although they were standing at attention, the Hawkkur troops could not help but notice that Lord Hawkes was carrying the Dragon Helm under his arm! Those close to the front could the hilt of the Dragon Sword sticking up above its scabbard strapped to his back.

Ever since their arrival and the rescue of Lady Tolen, there had been rumors of a Black Dragon – a Rahhol DragonHawk – somewhere on Conborine. The rumors had been reinforced by the capture of the Dragon Afflicted Reska Dragon Hunters during the assault on the Guilded Cage. More Reska Dragon Hunterhad been captured or killed tonight when the alert company responded to Lord Bane’s emergency beacon.

And now, the Lord DragonHawk was here with the Dragon Helm and the Dragon Sword to lead them into battle!

The only sound in the room was the whine of hydraulics as a cargo handler lifted Lord Hawkes so that all of the assembled Hawkkurs could see him.

“It has been fifteen thousand seasons since Drakkon battled Rahhol!” Elias Hawkes said, his voice loud and strong, echoing off the warehouse walls. “Since their defeat, the Rahhol have remained hidden among our eternal enemy, the Reska. The StarHawke Tycho has always known they were out there. As have all the generations of StarHawke Tychos before him. We have all known, the generations of StarHawkes and loyal Hawkkur Warriors that a day would come, when the time of the Great Dragon would grow near. That one day the Rahhol would come out of hiding and the battle between Drakkon and Rahhol would be rejoioned!”

“That battle started at the Diplomatic Dock at Gaanard!” Elias declared. “It continues here on Conborine!”

“Drakkon!” The Hawkkurs yelled in response, their combined voices rattling the walls of the warehouse. Elias grinned and turned to Commander Lorcan.

“You have your orders, Commander!” He said, as Procyon’s battle cry filled the warehouse with Dragon Magic. “Let’s get moving!”

Dragon Hunters Update

I've been working long and hard on Dragon Hunters. Tuning it up and reworking the story. In the spirit of being determined to do things my way, I have added some deleted parts back into the story, and written a couple of new chapters. More action, more attacks on the Tycho Star Traders and more DragonHawk vs. Dragon Hunter action.

Of course, the big battle between Drakkon and Rahhol is coming up as well.

It's slow going, but I'm finding a lot things I don't like. Mechanical things like sentence structure, grammar, and word usage.

All you kiddies out there in school, pay attention to your English grammar teachers! If you want to write coherently, that is.

I've gotten over the disappointment of this project taking so long. But that doesn't mean I'm going to change what I am doing now. I have a plan in my head that I'm going to follow.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch...

After a long weekend in Round Rock, Tx with my son, daughter-in-law, and 4-month old granddaughter, I'm back at Fort Digger and the keyboard.  I didn't write this weekend. In fact, when I opened up the Star Trader Data spreadsheet where I keep my daily writing log, I discovered that I haven't written anything since February 14, 2013.

So I'm at the keyboard today, making some progress on a part of Dragon Hunters that I was having some problems completing. Looks pretty good so far.

As always, thanks for reading!

Details! Details! Details!
I think I'm choking the story with too many details. I'll have to look at that and see what I can see!

A good restart...

Last night was a good start... or I guess I should say restart on repairs to Dragon Hunters. I rewrote the prologue last night in about two hours and I am happy with the results. So tonight I'll continue on, see how far I can get.

Some of the people following my work will say: "Dude, you keep rewriting!"

Yeah, I know. It's a bad habit of mine. I'm working through it... so to speak...

Thanks for reading!

Not necessarily a step backwards...

Last night I followed through with my plan and deleted the two parts of Dragon Hunters and reverted back to the full version before the split. I didn't lose anything, I copied the good parts from Part 1 into the main before deleting the parts.

Anyway, so no harm, no foul. Some progress lost, but not really. I just have to get my head straightened out and get back on course.

That's all for now.

So much for that idea...

How's it go?

The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray...

I had hoped to get some serious writing done over the weekend. That didn't work out quite like I hoped it would.

I hit a big block this weekend and just kept going over the same chapter over and over again. The end result was a butchered chapter that kinda sorta works...

Last night I was so frustrated I was ready to dump the whole DragonHawk Saga.

I didn't do that.

Tonight I feel like deleting a bunch of chapters and start over with them. Or just do without them. What I will probably do is dump the two parts and go back to the point in Dragon Hunters where I was just before the split.

Have to factor in the Monday factor. Monday is not a good day for me to make major decisions like this. And I've thinking about this in the back of my mind all day today while I was writing about the purpose and function of various systems on an offshore oil/gas platform.

Such is life. Doing one thing when you'd really rather be doing something else.

I did find a cool graphic on Facebook today. I'll post it at the top of the page. The author is my favorite author and my inspiration for writing!

As always...

Dragon Hunters Part 1: A Gathering of Hunters

Earlier this week I broke DragonHunters into two parts:

Part 1: "A Gathering of Hunters"

Part 2: "The Battle of Conborine"

As you know, (if you have been following this blog), The DragonHawk Saga is the story of the Hawkes Family, DragonHawks and the leaders of the Tycho Star Traders, as they prepare for the fulfillment of a ten thousand season (year) old prophecy, the Return of the Great Dragon.

In Dragon Hunters, A Gathering of Hunters, the Dragon Hunters gather at the Gaanard Trade Station for the first attack against the Drakkon of Tycho. Makala Hawkes is the StarHawke Tycho, the Elder of the Tycho Star Traders and their fierce Hawkkur Legion, struggles to convince the Star Trader Council of Elders of the danger looming before the Trade. The Royal Repubics of the InWorlds are embroiled in a growing war that threatens to engulf the Trade, despite their declared neutrality. But the Families do not want to listen to the StarHawke Tycho. The war means record profits for all.

In DragonHunters, The Battle of Conborine, an ambitious construction project by the Tolen and Blom Families sets the scene for the first battle between Drakkon and Rahhol since the DragonHawk War, some ten thousand seasons ago.

It's been slow getting started, but it's been a busy week. (Two 400+ pages training guides at my day job! But that's another story!) But now it's Saturday, and after a variety of chores and tasks, it's time to get down to some serious writing.

That's just a taste of what I am working on right now. I'll try to keep you posted as I go along.

As always...

Dragon Hunters: The Next Step Towards Publishing

The Next Step Towards Publishing:

Recognizing that 150,000 words and 500+ pages is too large, unless you are Robert Jordan.

Okay, as much as I still think it would be a good story in one  piece, I recognize that I probably should start smaller. So I have broken Dragon Hunters into two parts. Part 1 is about 72,000 words while Part 2 is about 52,000. Part 1 needs a quick read through to make sure it works, but Part 2 needs some more rewrite.

So, I'll go back through Part 1 and make sure it works. Then move on to Part 2.

Almost time to go public, via the web and a search for an agent/publisher. Also time to go public by doing something that is very hard for me. Letting someone else read my work. That's going to be the really hard part. I tend to want to hang on...

Its a bad trait to have if you write for a living. But I've got to take the plunge and go for it!

Wish me luck!

It's all in my head!
